PURPOSE:
Through the Local Giving Program, Wal-Mart stores, Sam's Clubs and Logistics facilities can support the needs of their communities by providing grants to local organizations. The Wal-Mart Foundation has awarded the Greensboro Police Department (GPD) a grant of $1,500 for Youth Outreach in communities within the Western Patrol Division. A budget ordinance needs to be approved by City Council in order to accept these grant funds.
BACKGROUND:
These seed funds will assist in the development of a Youth Outreach Program in communities within the Western Patrol Division. The program goal is to provide prevention-oriented strategies to promote positive youth development while building trust between police and youth in these neighborhoods. Examples of the positive alternatives which will be offered to youth consist of leadership opportunities, outreach, mentoring and character building. Programs will be held primarily in the communities to avoid transportation cost and to reach the youth in the community in which they live.
BUDGET IMPACT:
The Wal-Mart Foundation via the Local Giving Program has awarded a grant of $1,500 to GPD's Youth Outreach Program in communities within the Western Patrol Division for FY 2015. Funds will be used for program operating supplies including but not limited to printing, refreshments & certificates of participation and will be housed in account #220-3546-01.
