PURPOSE: Ansley Herring Wegner, Administrator, North Carolina Highway Historical Marker Program, notified Mayor Vaughan by letter dated December 19, 2014, that the North Carolina Highway Historical Marker Advisory Committee, hereafter referred to as Committee, approved a marker bearing the following inscription:

Greensboro Massacre

Ku Klux Klan & American
Nazi Party members,
on Nov. 3, 1979, shot &
killed five Communist
Workers Party members
one-tenth mile north.

It has been requested that the City of Greensboro let the North Carolina Highway Historical Marker Program know if the City Council supports the aforementioned marker as proposed or suggest alternate wording to the proposed marker.

BACKGROUND: The City Council may recommend changes to the wording of the marker. Due to space limitations on the marker, the wording must comply with strict criteria. "The heading or title consists of one or two lines of approximately sixteen letters or spaces to the line; m and w count as 1 1/2 spaces; the text of the inscription is usually not more than five or six lines of approximately twenty-three letters and spaces each." (Attached as Exhibit A) Any changes to the text of the marker must go back to the Committee for review and approval. If the City Council wishes to propose alternate wording, Ms. Ansley Wegner told me she can probably notify the committee via email rather than waiting until the next meeting scheduled in May 2015.

BUDGET IMPACT: None.
