PURPOSE:
Amend the budget to accept the USDA Local Food Promotion Program Grant, in the amount of $25,000. In September 2014, Greensboro was awarded a grant to support the development of a plan to improve access to local and regional foods within Greensboro's identified food deserts.

BACKGROUND:
In May 2014, City Council approved a grant application to the USDA Local Food Promotion Program. The grant will be used to develop a fresh food access plan as a collaborative effort between the Neighborhood Development, Planning, and Parks & Recreation Departments. The plan will identify strategies to improve retail access to fresh local foods in areas identified as food deserts; opportunities to expand existing local food business enterprises that address existing gaps in food access. The plan must be completed by September 2015.

This plan is one of the proactive strategies the City has undertaken to address the food disparity issues in the community. Attached is a memo prepared for Council in December 2014 that highlights the various activities underway.

BUDGET IMPACT:
The grant award of $25,000 requires an in-kind match of $8,500 in staff support from Neighborhood Development and Planning. This resolution will establish appropriations and expenditures equal to the amount of the grant award.

RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:
Staff recommends approval of the attached budget ordinance to accept the $25,000 grant award.
