PURPOSE:
On September 11, 2014, Lucky's Pet Spa and Resort hosted a fundraiser benefiting the Greensboro Police Department's canine teams. The Greensboro Police Foundation served as the fiscal agent. The Greensboro Police Foundation has presented the Greensboro Police Department with a donation of $9,036.59 from the proceeds. To accept and expend the funds, City Council approval is required.
 
BACKGROUND:
In celebration of its ten year anniversary, the owners of Lucky's Pet Spa and Resort hosted an event to honor the Greensboro Police Department's canine teams. Event sponsors included First Citizens Bank, Foster-Caviness, The Greensboro Police Foundation, Ron Johnson, Smith Leonard CPA, Jeff Oleynik, Dr. Jody Miller & The Oral Surgery Center, The Painted Plate, Steve and Joy Shavitz, Todd Swenson and Williford Insurance.
 
The event featured demonstrations by GPD's canine teams, during which the handlers highlighted their dogs' abilities to detect the presence of illegal narcotics, to track, to locate explosive devices, and to obey commands. Participants also viewed a video showing how dogs are used to catch fleeing suspects.
 
Proceeds from the event will build a new obstacle course for the canine teams and buy additional equipment for the handlers and dogs.
 
BUDGET IMPACT:
The Greensboro Police Foundation has presented the Greensboro Police Department with a donation of $9,036.59 to build a new obstacle course and to buy additional equipment for the canine team's handlers and dogs. The funds will be housed in account #220-3503-01.
 
RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:
It is requested and recommended that the City Council adopt the attached Budget Ordinance appropriating funding in the amount of $9,037 for the Greensboro Police Department's K9 Teams Donation FY 15.
