PURPOSE:
The Water Resources Department has applied for and received numerous NC Clean Water Management Trust Grant funds for a project City Council approved in 2008. The most recent application, submitted on February 2, 2015, requires a City funding match. The project supports the Department's MAP goals of Storm Water Management and Water Quality.
BACKGROUND:
In 2008 the City was awarded funding for the initial design assessment phase of the South Buffalo Creek and Habitat Water Quality Improvement Project. Construction of Phase I and Phase II and III of the project were partially funded by Clean Water Management Trust Fund match grants. This application is for Phase IV for design and construction of improvements along the southern edge of South Buffalo Creek.
The City is tasked through its individual National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Stormwater Permit to improve the quality of surface waters. South Buffalo Creek is a stream noted as having impaired biological integrity and historically high turbidity. South Buffalo Creek is also classified as nutrient sensitive waters (NSW) and is located in the Jordan Lake water supply watershed.
The Water Resources Department recently qualified to submit in the 2015 grant cycle and submitted a grant application by the February 2, 2015 deadline.
