PURPOSE:
The City has received a proposal for creating a new performance space within the Cultural Arts Center that will be funded through a $1 million donation from Jan Van Dyke of the Dance Project.

BACKGROUND:   The founder of the Dance Project, Jan Van Dyke has pledged $1 million to create a new performance space at the downtown Greensboro Cultural Center. The pledge from Ms. Van Dyke would finance an expansion of the cultural center to create a 7,500-square-foot space that would hold 400 to 500 patrons.
The proposed performance space would expand the northeast corner of the cultural center at 200 N. Davie St., which is a city-owned building that houses nonprofit arts groups. It will face LeBauer City Park, scheduled to open in 2016. The space would offer movable seating and an adaptable stage to accommodate professional performances of dance, theater, music and provide rental space creating additional revenue opportunity.
BUDGET IMPACT:
There will be no budget impact as a result of this project.

RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:
Staff requests council's consideration for allowing the City Manager to enter into negotiation and execute a contract for the construction of the performance space utilizing the donated funding.
