PURPOSE:
The Greensboro Police Department (GPD)'s Traffic Safety Unit applied for a grant on February 12, 2014 to the NC Governor's Highway Safety Program (NCGHSP) to obtain traffic analysis equipment to improve current traffic enforcement initiatives. The total grant project budget of $11,904 requires a 25% match. In accordance of the City's Grant Policy, City Council Approval was sought and received on March 4, 2014. The attached Agreement of Conditions needs to be signed by the appropriate representatives and the resolution approved by City Council in order to continue the application process.
BACKGROUND:
The mission of the NCGHSP is to promote highway safety awareness and reduce the number of traffic crashes and fatalities in the state of North Carolina through the planning and execution of safety programs.
The grant funds will be used to provide technology and equipment to aid in traffic enforcement and collection of statistical data for reporting. The equipment will assist the Greensboro Police Department Traffic Safety Unit in various Traffic Enforcement Initiatives such as the 2013 Wendover Avenue zero-tolerance campaign against speeding.
BUDGET IMPACT:
On March 4, 2014, City Council approved the submission of a grant application (Res#59-14). City cash match funds of $2,976 will leverage $8,928 in federal funds. The City match funds will be provided from NC State Drug Tax funds.
