PURPOSE:
The Greensboro Coliseum has been awarded a $76,758 Special Events, Tourism and Culturally-Related Activities (SETRAC) grant from the Greensboro Convention and Visitors Bureau for the expansion of the Greensboro Aquatic Center (GAC) west pool deck. To accept this grant, a budget ordinance is requested for approval from Greensboro City Council in accordance with current city fiscal procedures.
BACKGROUND:
The GAC west pool deck is one of the primary locations that competitors use before and after their individual races. Currently, the existing deck area becomes congested and extremely difficult for participants, meet officials, and staff to navigate during peak race times. This has resulted in consistent complaints and feedback for improvements. In addition, with upcoming major events such as the USA Synchro, YMCA, and NCAA championships, which will draw up to 2,000 competitors each, the expansion of the west pool deck is a critical component for GAC to recruit and retain more prestigious level events. As a result, the expansion of the west pool deck will create additional space for the GAC to more effectively host these national swimming and diving meets, while increasing the facility's ability to draw more visitors to Greensboro.
The project will include the removal of two existing "X" brace supports and restructuring of steel supports to create the additional foot traffic space on the west pool deck. In addition, the removal and restructuring of each brace support is a capital improvement item valued at $38,379 each, for a total of $76,758.
