PURPOSE:
The Field Operations department requests City Council approval to extend the contract for municipal solid waste hauling services with Hilco Transport, Inc. for a period of one year from October 11, 2015.
BACKGROUND:
At its September 4, 2012 meeting, City Council authorized the City Manager to enter into a contract with Hilco Transport, Inc. for municipal solid waste hauling services. The contract was to have an initial 3 year term with the option of two additional one-year extensions. In October of 2012, the City entered into a contract with Hilco Transport, Inc. to provide municipal solid waste hauling services from the City’s Burnt Poplar Road transfer station to the Uwharrie Environmental Landfill in Montgomery County, NC. In FY 2014-15, the cost of hauling of about 202,000 tons of municipal solid waste from the City’s transfer station was about $2,400,000.
This contract extension is the first of two available one-year extensions. The one-year extension for municipal solid waste hauling services has the support of the City of Greensboro Solid Waste Commission. This item was referred to Council by the General Government and Infrastructure Committees.
BUDGET IMPACT:
The funds for this contract extension are available in the current approved operating budget in account # 551-4306-07.5429.
RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:
The Field Operations department recommends and requests that City Council approve the one-year contract extension for municipal solid waste hauling services with Hilco Transport, Inc. estimated at $2,500,000.
