PURPOSE:
The Greensboro Fire Department (GFD) has received a non-matching grant from the State Farm Insurance Company. The grant was awarded in recognition of the fire department's response to, and actions at a structure fire at the residence of an insured customer. Grant funding will be utilized to purchase portable and home carbon monoxide detectors.
BACKGROUND:
The Greensboro Fire Department is committed to providing safe working conditions for all personnel, as well as providing fire prevention services to the public. Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas that is also colorless and odorless. Carbon monoxide can cause symptoms of routine sickness, yet be potentially fatal. The gas can be produced when home heating systems malfunction, or when other heating devices malfunction or are misused. This grant will fund the purchase of portable carbon monoxide monitoring devices, which will alert emergency responders to the presence of carbon monoxide gas. Prompt detection of carbon monoxide not only reveals a possible cause of patient illness, but also allows emergency responders to properly take care of themselves and take steps to mitigate the emergency. A portion of the grant will also be utilized to purchase a limited number of home carbon monoxide devices, which will be provided to residents who have experienced a carbon monoxide emergency.
BUDGET IMPACT:
This requested action will have no adverse impact on the City of Greensboro budget. The account, State Farm GNC Grant FY 2014, #220-4011-01 has been identified to house these funds. This program will not require any additional City funding.
