PURPOSE:
The City of Greensboro, City of High Point and Guilford County were awarded a joint Federal Byrne Justice Assistance Grant in 2013. The grant is based on population and Part 1 violent crime statistics. Per the special conditions of the grant awards, a trust fund account has been established to house the interest earning funds. Any interest earned must be expended during the grant period. Interest has been calculated by the Finance Department for these accounts through June 2014. In accordance with current City fiscal procedures, approval of a budget ordinance is required by City Council to expend these funds.

BACKGROUND:
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program, (JAG), provides states and units of local government with funds for additional personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, training, technical assistance, and information systems for criminal justice for any one or more of the JAG Program's six purpose areas: (1) law enforcement programs; (2) prosecution and court programs; (3) prevention and education programs; (4) corrections and community corrections programs; (5) drug treatment programs; and (6) planning, evaluation, and technology involvement programs.

BUDGET IMPACT:
A Budget Ordinance (Ord#13-62) was adopted by City Council to house and expend funds for the 2013 Byrne JAG Award in the amount of $117,443 on June 4, 2013.
