PURPOSE:
The North Carolina Department of Transportation-Public Transportation Division (NCDOT-PTD) has selected the City of Greensboro's Department of Transportation-Public Transportation Division to be a sponsor for the FY 2014-2015 Apprenticeship and Internship Program. In order to participate in this program City Council needs to authorize the execution of the contract with NCDOT-PTD and a budget ordinance needs to be approved to establish funding.

BACKGROUND:
The NCDOT- PTD Apprenticeship and Internship Program offers undergraduate students and recent college graduates an opportunity to make a difference while getting a step ahead of their competition. Sponsoring transit systems benefit by having an apprentice or intern on staff to assist with everyday operational tasks and to address special projects. The program offers one year, full-time, salaried apprenticeships for recent college graduates at various transit systems throughout the state.

The apprentice would work primarily with GTA performing professional and administrative staff work in the planning, organizing, and administering of programs and services provided by the Division. Also the individual will gain extensive knowledge of the operations and administration of a medium Urban Transit System (GTA) that is responsible for fixed route, ADA para-transit, demand responsive, and flex route services. In addition, the individual will interact with Greensboro Transit Authority (GTA) Board as support staff.
