PURPOSE:
Through their Local Giving Program, Wal-Mart stores, Sam's Clubs and Logistics facilities support the needs of their communities by providing grants to local organizations. The Wal-Mart Foundation has awarded the Greensboro Police Department a grant of $2,500 for the National Night Out (NNO) Kick-Off Event, safety giveaways and promotional items for other community/outreach programs. A budget ordinance needs to be approved by City Council in order to accept these grant funds.

BACKGROUND:
The first National Night Out, "America's Night Out Against Crime", was held August 1, 1984 as an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. The Greensboro Police Department has been associated with NNO since its inception in 1984 and has received numerous national awards for outstanding participation. Activities associated with National Night Out include cookouts, parades, visits from police officers and fire fighters, and safety fairs. This year, the 31st Annual NNO is scheduled for Tuesday, August 5, 2014.

BUDGET IMPACT:
The Wal-Mart Foundation via the Local Giving Program has awarded a grant to GPD's Community Relations Office under the Fiscal Year 2015 of $2,500. The funds will be used for program supplies for National Night Out Kick-Off, safety giveaways & promotional items for other community/outreach programs and will be housed in account #220-3558-01.
