PURPOSE:
Through the Local Giving Program, Wal-Mart stores, Sam's Clubs and Logistics facilities can support the needs of their communities by providing grants to local organizations. The Wal-Mart Foundation has awarded the Greensboro Police Department (GPD) a grant totaling $250 for the Traffic Safety Education Program. A budget ordinance needs to be approved by City Council in order to accept these grant funds

BACKGROUND:
The GPD's Traffic Safety Team ("Team") is responsible for selective traffic enforcement activities and programs designed to reduce accident-causing violations, the investigation of school bus stop arm violations, addressing citizens' traffic complaints, and staffing the highway speed enforcement program. Team members are also responsible for the investigation and reconstruction of serious injury and fatal crashes.

The Team has a Traffic Safety Education Program which conducts a variety of programs tailored to specific audiences. The goal of the Traffic Safety Education Program is two-fold: 1) develop replicable programs and expand educational resources and 2) provide learning and service opportunities for the youth in our community.

The most recent initiative is the "A MSG 2 Die 4" program focusing on the dangers of texting & driving. Guilford County High School students are first exposed to four short videos written, directed by & starring theatre arts students from Guilford County High School.
