PURPOSE:
The Greensboro Fire Department has received a donation in the amount of $175,000 from Colonial Pipeline Company to construct a storage building to house all Flammable Liquids Firefighting Equipment. The storage building will be constructed on City-owned property at Fire Station #19, 6900 Downwind Road. This location was chosen due to the close proximity of the Greensboro Fuel Storage Farms. A budget ordinance needs to be approved by City Council in order to accept these funds.
BACKGROUND:
The Greensboro Fire Department protects the largest above ground refined fuel storage in the United States. Colonial Pipeline Company is the largest transporter of refined fuel in the United States. The Greensboro Fuel Farm and pipelines serve the entire East Coast of the United States with fuel products. The fuel facilities in the area are considered Critical Infrastructure by the Department of Homeland Security.
Following the June 13, 2010 tank fire at Colonial Pipeline, a task force assembled to review the actions of Colonial Pipeline and the Greensboro Fire Department made several recommendations for response to tank fire incidents. One of the recommendations offered was to maintain all flammable liquids firefighting equipment in one central location within close proximity of the tank farm. The Greensboro Fire Department has worked closely with Colonial Pipeline for many years. Construction of this storage facility will place all necessary flammable liquids firefighting equipment in one location, as recommended by the task force.
