PURPOSE:
Approve a resolution recommending the addition of the Carolina Cadillac Company Building located at 304 East Market Street to the National Register of Historic Places.

BACKGROUND:
The State Historic Preservation Office requests the City to review the nomination of properties to the National Register of Historic Places within the City limits. A property listed on the National Register makes the property owner a candidate for federal and state tax credits for rehabilitation, but does not restrict the private property owner's use of private funds to maintain or alter their property.

On May 28, 2014 the Historic Preservation Commission conducted a public hearing to accept comments on the nomination of the Carolina Cadillac Company Building to the National Register.  A summary of the comments from the hearing are attached.

According to the nomination report, "The Carolina Cadillac Company Building was one of the first dealership buildings to be constructed in downtown Greensboro. The 1922 Carolina Cadillac Company Building is locally significant and meets National Register Criterion for architecture. The automobile showroom with its rear service area is an early and well-preserved automobile dealership building... Designed by architect Harry J. Simmonds, the two story brick building is an engaging mix of early twentieth century Commercial and Mission Revival styles."

The addition of this property to the National Register will have a positive economic impact in downtown Greensboro by encouraging reinvestment in this block of East Market Street.

BUDGET IMPACT: None.
